Leading students to a bright future

A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite imagination, and instill a love of learning, essentially...revealing their potential where it might have been Hidden

Their feet were moving, dresses were swaying and voices were rising in a crescendo of words of welcome. “We are so very happy to welcome you today!” The repeat of harmony drilled down into me, and I believed that in fact these children were “so very happy” to welcome us this day. Their joy-filled message was no forced march on uninterested children. This message had been inspired within them and delivered to us, visitors from worlds away.

Grace Ninsiima, a volunteer teacher, was the source of their inspiration. Through her encouragement, Grace hugged the heart of each child on their journey to a future that has not yet been imagined. Acts of grace, embodied in their teacher, Grace.

As a former teacher, I noticed right away that Grace connected with every student swaying before us. She directed their welcome song with every fiber of her body and soul. It mattered to her that the intent was delivered with love, joy and enthusiasm. WIth her hands directing the notes, she walked in rhythm with the song, gliding in front of every student to encourage them, “Let your welcome overcome the fear of the unknown, then you will have new friends.” Grace showed her natural gifts as an educator whose calling is to transform lives. It was clear that Grace was born to teach. Yet she had no credentials, no support, no sustainable income. If she was to bloom and blossom to the highest levels, then she needed support.

I reached out to my former students, shared Grace’s story, and prayed someone would step up to help. Colonel Robyn Burk was all in. Robyn is a gifted artist, natural leader and retired Colonel in the Air Force whose generosity is boundless. Robyn provided a scholarship for Grace to continue her education and earn a salary, even during the COVID lockdown.

A good teacher’s legacy is forever

Motivated by the opportunity and her passion for teaching, Grace is now Head of the Nursery section at Byumba Pres Primary School. She hopes to continue to use her gifts as a teacher to one day become a principal. Could it be that one day Grace will be a Superintendent? If so, then more children will move their feet, welcome strangers and share Grace’s inspiration.
